What is CE?
Conductive education (CE) teaches children and adults primarily with movement disorders different skills reflecting the needs of the whole personality. In literature around the world, CE is described as many different things. Explaining CE in a nutshell often neglects its complexity and its changing structure due to: newer research, widening cliental and foremost its ability to work with an individual with sensitivity given to the individual’s microcosm.
In the center of this approach stands the conductor, a professional trained in conductive education. There are a few universities and colleges around the world offering this training, but none in Canada yet. Most literature suggests that a conductor is a mixture of different professionals like physiotherapist, speech and occupational therapist, teacher, nurse and more. This assumption often creates unnecessary tension between the conductor and other professionals as the training of the conductor however centers the pedagogy- the art of teaching- of CE.
Movement disorders in most cases not only affects motor learning but also comes with additional disabilities, which can have huge primary and secondary affects on all areas of development and especially on learning itself. Therefore the conductor, as a teacher covering all areas of development, is trained to teach movement, cognitive, social behavior, self-reliance, personal and emotional skills in a conductive way.
The conductor looks at what the individual can already do and determines from there the next step of the individuals development is. This is a positive outlook on a disability and helps to build up on success and confidence. Conductive Education acknowledges that you are never to young or old to start learning new skill. CE emphasizes that the way new skills are learned is unique to the individual and requires flexible, positive and encouraging teaching.
The conductor has access to unique teaching skills like special group pedagogy, rhythmical intention, argorythimical tasks series, knowledge how to use simple and CE specific furniture and more. These tools can be interchanged and omitted depending on the circumstances as long as the pedagogy stays pure.
In conductor training courses it is the conductor is encouraged to use their professional and personal experiences as well as their personality, as a teaching tool. CE may appear different depending on the conductor and the center’s philosophy, however the pedagogy should stay the same around the world.
Parents, caregivers or spouses of the individual with a movement disorder are encouraged to learn how this pedagogy can unfold in their the day to day life in order to make CE a truly holistic approach.
Our Story
Moving Ahead was founded in 2010 out of a need to bring year round services Conductive Education services to BC . Until then Conductive Education was only available in form of sporadic short intensive camps in BC.
Graduating 10 years ago at the University of Wolverhampton, UK and having over a decade of national and international experiences in Conductive Education which enabled us to deepen our expertise and envision what is possible, outside what is often expected of individuals with disabilities.
We are passionate about unlocking potential in each individual we work with as well as creating new one. This passions stems from having family member severely affected by CE. With spending his and my childhood in different therapy setting, CE always struck us the most
